ARCATA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt hosted Sonoma State Wednesday night for a conference matchup inside Lumberjack Arena. On High School Night, the 'Jacks started off hot and took set one, but dropped the next three sets to fall to Sonoma with a final score of 1-3 (25-22, 20-25, 17-25, 21-25).
Nicole Yakushenok had 15 assists and
Ryleeh Tuaolo led the team with five blocks and contributed four kills. Humboldt now holds a record of 5-12 overall and 2-7 in CCAA play.
A back and forth first set between the 'Jacks and Seawolves had an exciting finish to start off the match. With the two teams exchanging points the entire set, nobody was able to pull away. The largest lead that both teams possessed throughout the match was two points. Tied at 22-22, a Seawolf service error put Humboldt up by one.
Lindsey McLaughlin and
Graysen Trupp finished the set off with back-to-back kills, giving Humboldt a 25-22 victory and 1-0 set advantage.
Sonoma State jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set two but the 'Jacks slowly crept their way back into the match. An
Elyse McKinney kill and
Gianna Giacomotto service ace made it an 11-10 Seawolf advantage. A flipped script from set one saw Sonoma State score the final three points in set two to pull away in the end 25-20 and tie the match 1-1.
The Seawolves grabbed the momentum early in set three when they jumped out to a 9-0 lead to put the pressure on Humboldt. The 'Jacks once again fought their way back.
Awelina Fakalata cut the Seawolf lead to three points when she got a kill on a long rally, making it 18-15 Sonoma. The Seawolves closed the door on Humboldt, scoring seven of the next nine points to take set three with a final score of 25-17.
Although set four began with Humboldt falling behind 3-0, the 'Jacks evened the score at 4-4 when Fakalata blocked the Sonoma attack.
Ryleeh Tuaolo gave the 'Jacks a 15-14 advantage, resulting in the third lead change of the set.
Aurora Meneghetti's kill to make it 17-16 gave Humboldt a glimpse of hope to extend the match to a fifth set, but three Lumberjack errors and a Brooklyn Jackson kill put Sonoma up 20-17. Coming out of a timeout, Humboldt grabbed two quick points of Seawolf errors to pull within one and make it 19-20. However, Sonoma scored five of the final seven points and finished the match with a 25-21 set four victory.
