CHICO, Calif. -- On Sunday afternoon, Cal Poly Humboldt broke even with the third ranked team in the nation, Chico State. After a penalty kick goal from
Cole Falco in the 75th minute, the 'Jacks played to a 1-1 draw on the road and picked up one point in the standings. Humboldt now holds a record of 4-5-3 overall and 1-3-2 in conference play.
"The guys fought really hard today and had a great mentality from start to finish," stated head coach
Fred Jungemann. "Chico is a very good team, but our boys hung with them and deserved at least a point today. Now we have to build on this and see if we can develop some confidence through more consistent performances like this."
No. 3 Chico State got on the scoreboard early when Miles Rice headed a ball in to the top corner on a Dawson White assist at the 5:19 mark. The first Lumberjack opportunity came in the 26th minute when
Juan Perez shot to the bottom center of the goal that was saved by the Chico keeper. The Wildcats had a strong first half and applied plenty of pressure to Humboldt, out-shooting the 'Jacks 5-2 and having five corners compared to the Lumberjacks one. At the half, No. 3 Chico held a 1-0 advantage.
It was a tale of two halves, as Humboldt flipped the momentum in their favor offensively. In the 75th minute,
James Haynes made a move into the box but was fouled, setting senior captain
Cole Falco up for a penalty kick goal. Falco converted when he sent the ball left and the Chico goalkeeper guessed incorrectly. The 'Jacks tied the match at 1-1 and had 15 minutes of play left to upset the third ranked team in the nation. Humboldt was unable to score in the final minutes, but their defense held the Wildcats to no shots on goal in the second half. The 'Jacks out-shot Chico 5-4 and had more corner kick opportunities (4-1) in the second half, leading to a 1-1 draw on the road at No. 3 Chico State.
