Humboldt Downs Toros, Earn First Home Sweep Since 2016

ARCATA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt hosted the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (CSUDH) for a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup on Saturday evening from Lumberjack Arena. Humboldt earned their first sweep on their home floor since 2016, as they took down the Toros in three sets to pick up their second CCAA win. Awelina Fakalata led the team with 11 kills, 12 digs and a .500 hitting percentage. Kyra Slavik also had 16 assists and five service aces.

"This win couldn't have happened at a better time," stated head coach Angela Spoja. "We have been working on our unforced errors and I think it was better tonight, playing cleaner led us to this three set win. We had solid performances from Fakalata, McLaughlin, Barajas and Flores. Also Slavik had five aces! We are happy to have swept Dominguez Hills at home, the first time we have swept at home since 2016. It's very exciting! We will be back in the gym on Monday giving it our all to mark the halfway point through the season and getting ready for Sonoma State on Wednesday."

The 'Jacks immediately grabbed the momentum when Kyra Slavik started set one off with a service ace. A kill from Kailie Flores and service ace from Ryleeh Tuaolo continued the early Lumberjack run as they went up 7-2 over the Toros. With a 12-10 Humboldt advantage, the 'Jacks scored eight straight points to take a commanding 20-10 lead over CSUDH. Dominguez Hills did not go away easily, as they fought their way back and seven straight points made it a 23-21 Humboldt lead. Lindsey McLaughlin put set one away for good when she slammed a kill on an assist from Kyra Slavik to take set one 25-22.

Humboldt continued the theme of early dominance to begin set two, as they jumped out to a 8-4 lead over the Toros when Tuaolo posted her second service ace on the night. CSUDH errors and a pair of Slavik aces extended the Lumberjack lead to 13-6. Kailie Flores paced the way as she added two kills to go along with Awelina Fakalata's four kills, keeping a healthy lead over the Toros. McLaughlin once again closed out the set with a strong kill to give Humboldt a 2-0 lead after taking set two 25-19.

Slavik started set three off in familiar fashion when she had a service ace that put the 'Jacks up 1-0. The Toros scored four straight points to take an 8-7 lead and hoped to hold the momentum to extend the match. The Lumberjacks chopped down any Toro hopes when two Mina Barajas service aces and three CSUDH errors gave Humboldt a 12-8 advantage. Three straight Fakalata kills put the 'Jacks up 18-16 which set Humboldt up for a sweep. Kills from Ryleeh Tuaolo, Graysen Trupp, Lindsey McLaughlin and Elyse McKinney were followed by a fifth and final Kyra Slavik ace to give the 'Jacks a 25-20 set three victory and home sweep for the first time since 2016.
