Humboldt Holds on to Defeat Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Cal Poly Humboldt headed up the road to Western Oregon University and took on the Wolves for a GNAC versus CCAA non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. With a late push by Western Oregon in the final minutes, the Jacks held on and secured a 79-78 victory thanks to Brandon Bento-Jackson's game winner with three seconds on the clock. Humboldt had six players reach double-digits for scoring and were led by Brandon Bento-Jackson and Sage Wayans with 14 points each.

Humboldt fell behind 5-0 to start the game but quickly responded with a 7-0 run of their own, capped off by a three-pointer from freshman guard Brandon Bento-Jackson to give the Jacks their first lead of the game. Sage Wayans gave Humboldt a spark after stealing a ball near the wing and slamming it home on the other end to put the Jacks up 11-8. About half way through the first, Cam Timmons blocked a Western Oregon shot attempt that Bento-Jackson took to the other end of the court for a tough "and-one" finish. Wayans gave the Jacks their largest lead of the first half, 33-26, when he punched a ball through the basket with authority at the 4:25 mark. With 31 seconds to go in the first half, Ramiah Adedigba converted on a layup to send Humboldt to the locker rooms up four points at the half, 42-38.

Cam Timmons continued his presence in the paint, as he added to Humboldt's lead to open the second half, then assisted a Liyongwei Xie three-pointer on the next play. The Lumberjack defense stepped up as they were able to hold the Wolves scoreless for over four minutes. Humboldt maintained their lead until the final minute. Western Oregon gave the Jacks trouble trying to inbound the basketball and created turnovers that eventually led to layups and free throw opportunities. With under a minute to go, the Wolves managed to go on a 6-0 run and take a 78-77 lead over Humboldt. Brandon Bento-Jackson came up clutch and sank the game winner with three seconds on the clock to lift Humboldt over Western Oregon, 79-78.
