Former and current Lumberjacks converged on Redwood Bowl to usher in the start of the 2023 track & field season
ARCATA, Calif.--- Cal Poly Humboldt Track & Field opened up the 2023 season with their annual Green & Gold Open on Saturday at Redwood Bowl. The scrimmage meet split the Lumberjack squad into Green and Gold teams while also welcoming athletes from neighboring College of the Redwoods. The meet also served as the program's alumni reunion, with former Lumberjacks and community members joining in on the action.

The final combined score saw the Green team narrowly defeat the Gold team, 68-64 to take intrasquad bragging rights. On the women's side, the Green team took a 33-30 win while on the men's side, the Gold team narrowly outscored the Green team 33-30.

In terms of individual performances, many Lumberjacks had a chance to compete at abbreviated distances in lieu of the traditional distances they will compete at through the spring. On the women's side, Joy Hano clocked 7.68 seconds in the 60 meter dash, 18.61 seconds in the 150 meter dash and 8.81 in the 60 meter hurdles to win all three events. Isabel Perez-Zoghbi clocked a time of 46.37 seconds in the 300 meter hurdles and won the 600 meter run with a time of 1:39.34. In the throws, Delaena Montes and Nizhoni Kears took the first two positions in the shot put, with Montes launching a winning throw of 10.87 meters while Kears threw a 10.79 meter put. Montes also took the Discus with a winning toss of 27.74 meters.

On the men's side, Ryan Castro and Harry Singh went 1-2 in the 60 meter dash and 150 meter dash. Singh also stepped up in distance to win the 300 meter dash. Aris Valerio ran 1:20.72 en route to winning the 600 meter run. In the throws, Terrence Allen finished second in the shot put and set a new personal best by over two meters to finish second in the hammer throw, while Robert Cardenas finished second in the discus.

As always, Saturday's track meet ended with the traditional "log" relay as former and current Lumberjacks helped welcome the start of a new season.
