CHICO, Calif.--- Despite cold and wet early season conditions, Cal Poly Humboldt's
Grace Kasberger and
Cocome McKamey turned in quality performances to close out the second day of action at the Chico Multi-Event Invitational at University Stadium. Kasberger finished in second place with a combined events score of 4062 points, while McKamey, in her first collegiate heptathlon, finished right behind in third place with a score of 3996 points.
"The ladies had a great experience toughing it out in subpar conditions and coming away with some PR's," head track & field coach
Sarah Ingram said. "My hats go off to them!"
Fresno Pacific's Brianna Green took the top spot with a total event score of 4310 points.
McKamey rode positive momentum from yesterday's event by starting day two with a first place performance in the long jump, launching ahead of the competition with a mark of 5.16 meters. Kasberger followed that up with a fourth place performance in the javelin throw with a mark of 25.32 meters. In the final event of the competition, the 800-meter run, Kasberger and McKamey came away with second and third place behind times of 2:30.21 and 2:33.85.
"I told Coco to pace a 2:30 (800), which wold be a ten second PR for her," Ingram said. "She came through with a seven second PR at 2:33! Good for third place overall in the hep and just shy of 4000 points! In conditions like this, that's a phenomenal start. Gracie had to do all the work in that race leading the pack all by herself for the first 650 meters, then Green from FPU kicked and took over the lead. Gracie finished strong but couldn't quite hold her off. She took second overall and it was a great showing for Cal Poly Humboldt this week!"
