CHICO, Calif.--- Despite a strong 36 point first quarter to start the game, the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks were unable to keep their momentum, as the host Chico State Wildcats outscored their opponents in the remaining three quarters, including holding the visitors to just five points in the second frame, to take the 79-66 win and complete the regular season sweep at Acker Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Jayci Bayne led all scorers with another career best performance of 24 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Madison Parry and
Jaydon Williams both earned double doubles, as Parry scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Williams had 12 points and 11 rebounds. The loss drops Humboldt (9-11, 7-9 CCAA) two games out of the sixth and final conference playoff position while Chico (16-6, 12-4 CCAA) wins their seventh straight to move to third in the current CCAA standings.
Humboldt jumped out to an early 17-10 lead halfway through the first quarter and outscored the Wildcats 19-6 over the last five minutes to enter the second quarter with a 36-16 advantage. However, the 'Jacks struggled in the second quarter, hitting only two field goals as Chico held the visitors to just five points to close the gap to 41-34 heading into halftime. The North Coast squad's shooting woes would continue after their red hot first quarter, as the team shot 4-15 from the field in the third quarter and 3-13 in the final frame. A 3-pointer by Chico's Bailey Jones with under a minute left in the third gave the 'Cats their first lead of the game going into the fourth quarter. Parry responded with a 3-pointer with 7:36 remaining to regain a one point advantage, but Chico regained the lead moments later and expanded their lead to seven with 4:17 to go. Humboldt managed just two field goals over the last four minutes of the game as Chico scored 10 unanswered points to pull away for good and earn the 79-66.
NOTABLE STATS
After starting the game a red hot `12-18 from the field, the 'Jacks offense cooled significantly after the first frame, as the team managed only nine field goals and shot 20 percent from the field for the next three quarters combined. The Wildcats were able to take better advantage of turnovers, outscoring their rivals 23-10 in points of turnovers. They also outscored Humboldt 24-16 in points in the paint.
Individually,
Jaydon Williams earned her second double double this season while
Madison Parry earned her sixth. Parry also had three blocks.
Devon Lewis dished out eight assists to lead the team again while also pulling down eight rebounds.
Kaz Parks was the other Lumberjack to score in double digits, chipping in 10 points.

The 'Jacks (9-11, 7-9 CCAA) return to Lumberjack Arena next weekend for the first of two straight homestands. They face off against Cal State East Bay (10-10, 7-9 CCAA) on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in hopes of regaining ground in the CCAA playoff hunt. Thursday's game is also "Staff Appreciation and Pediatric Cancer Night." On Saturday, Feb. 11, the team welcomes No. 6 Cal State Dominguez Hills (20-1, 14-1 CCAA) who sit atop the CCAA. Saturday's game is "Black Out Night" with tip-off again slated for 5:30 p.m.
