ARCATA, Calif. -- The
Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball team earned a win on their home floor Thursday night, defeating Cal State East Bay with a final score of 66-63.
Marlon Ruffin recorded his first double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Cal State East Bay led for the first 17 minutes of the first half, with the largest Pioneer lead being nine points. With three minutes to go before the half, Ruffin hit a three-pointer that gave the 'Jacks a 30-29 lead. He ended up scoring the last 12 points of the first half for Humboldt and lifted the Lumberjacks to a 34-33 halftime advantage.
Humboldt extended their lead to nine points, 44-35, after
Malek Davis converted the free-throw following a foul on a successful driving layup attempt. With four minutes to go, East Bay's Dimitrios Klonaras tied the game at 58 when he scored on a layup. After being down 58-51, the Pioneers' late 12-0 run gave them a five point lead, 63-58, with just two minutes to go. However, the Lumberjacks remained aggressive and attacked the rim, which drew five fouls in the final two minutes of the game. Ruffin made four straight free throws and Davis hit a clutch layup along with two free throws to close out the game with a 66-63 Lumberjack victory.
