LOLETA, Calif. -- On Wednesday, Cal Poly Humboldt swept their non-conference doubleheader against Dominican University after winning game one with a final score of 5-0 and game two with a final score of 8-0 via mercy rule. Humboldt improved to 8-12 overall and Dominican fell to 7-8 overall.
GAME ONE: Micaela Harris singled to start the bottom of the third inning, then the 'Jacks quickly went up 2-0 after a towering home run from
Katlyn Gifford to right field. A
Vanessa Saltos single sparked a two out rally in the home half of the fourth inning.
McKenna Beach and
Micaela Harris followed up with back-to-back hits that help put two more Lumberjack runs on the scoreboard. Humboldt scratched one more run across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Katlyn Gifford and
Izzy Starr hit a pair of doubles to extend the lead to 5-0.
Gaige Garcia impressed in the circle, as she pitched six shutout innings and only allowed three hits. Garcia improved her record to 4-2 for the season and has won four straight games for the Lumberjacks.

Katlyn Gifford hit her first home run of the season and also had a double. She scored twice and drove in two runs.

GAME TWO: Cal Poly Humboldt carried their momentum into the second game of the doubleheader behind strong pitching from
Alyssa Smokey and continued consistency of offensive production. Out of the 13 hits that the Lumberjacks had, eight were extra base hits. The first four Humboldt runs were batted in off doubles from
Izzy Starr,
Alyssa Smokey, and
Vanessa Saltos. It was a lot of runs that came late in the game from Humboldt, as it was only a 2-0 Lumberjack lead to start the fifth inning. To cap off the three-run fifth inning,
Alyssa Smokey singled up the middle to drive in Saltos. The sixth and final inning saw
Micaela Harris lead off with a triple in the right center field gap. Harris then scored on a wild pitch and the momentum carried on with pinch-hitter
Julia Rivera. Rivera drew a walk and proceeded to steal second base.
Katlyn Gifford singled through the left side and advanced to second base as the Dominican left fielder attempted to throw out Rivera advancing to third base on the play. With two runners in scoring position and a 6-0 Humboldt lead, arguably one of the most clutch hitters on the team in
Izzy Starr singled to right field that drove both runs home. The 'Jacks walked off on the Penguins after reaching the eight run mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning. Humboldt has now won six out their last seven games.

UP NEXT
On Friday, Humboldt will open a four game series as they host San Francisco State in a CCAA matchup from Bear River Sports Complex in Loleta, Calif. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
San Francisco State currently is 7-10 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
