Gold River, Calif. — After wet weather delayed the start of the season, the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks finally launched the 2023 season with a pair of races at the Hornet Invitational hosted by Sacramento State on Saturday at Lake Notoma. 

"Overall the team improved," head coach Matt Weise said. "The novice 8 and varsity 4 had the biggest progressions both technically and in the way they raced physically. The v8 and 2v4 had better performances in the morning. They need to develop better responses when the boat gets out of sync in order to get back to a good racing rhythm."

The 'Jacks faced off against Saint Mary's in the morning session, where they earned double victories in the varsity 4 and varsity 8 events. 

"We had a good race against St. Mary's," Weise said. "We won the varsity 8 and varsity 4 events. Our novices had to race their second 8 because they do not have novices. We were a bit outclassed in that event but the boat raced well."

The Green & Gold came back in the afternoon and faced off against the host Hornets of Sacramento State, but were unable to pull off the second event victory of the day.

"Not quite the upset we hoped for," the coach said. "We raced well against Sac State but they got us."

UP NEXT: 
Humboldt will be back on the water this upcoming weekend when they travel to Seattle, Washington to compete at the Husky Open at Montlake Cut. There they will face off against GNAC foes Seattle Pacific and Western Washington.
