ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt softball team traveled to Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park on Friday to kick-off a four game CCAA series against the first place and 13th ranked Sonoma State. Friday's double header saw the Lumberjacks fall twice in the late innings of each game. Sonoma State took game one with a final score of 2-1 and game two with a final score of 4-2.
Katlyn Gifford led Humboldt offensively for the day, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two walks, and two runs batted in.Â
GAME 1
Sonoma State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jordyn Martinez singled through the right side to drive in a run. In the top half of the third inning,
Anna Brondos singled through the left side and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from
Vanessa Saltos.
Micaela Harris put the ball in play next, reaching on an error by the Seawolf second baseman and Brondos scored on the play, tying the game at one run a piece. In the bottom of the sixth, Sonoma put together a rally that scratched a run across the plate on a Skylar Linnane single.
Julia Rivera gave the 'Jacks hope to tie the game in the final inning after singling on a pinch hit opportunity. However, Humboldt came up just short and fell to Sonoma State 2-1.Â

Gaige Garcia (5-4) received the loss. She pitched six innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out five batters.

GAME 2
Micaela Harris singled to right field and proceeded to steal second base to get Humboldt rolling offensively in the top of the first.
Shelby Shanks walked next and
Katlyn Gifford doubled to center field that drove in both Harris and Shanks. The 'Jacks claimed an early 2-0 lead. The Seawolves responded in the bottom half of the first as they scored an unearned run to make it a 2-1 game. Both Sonoma State and Cal Poly Humboldt pitching staffs kept the offensive action to a minimum until the sixth inning. In the bottom half of the sixth, the Seawolves scored three runs on four hits, which included a go-ahead home run by Jordyn Martinez. With a 4-2 Sonoma lead in the final at-bats, Humboldt didn't go down without a fight. Back-to-back hits from
Vanessa Saltos and Sarah Ingram put two runners in scoring position and gave the 'Jacks an opportunity to tie the game with one hit. However, Charlie Johnson of Sonoma State was able to close the door in the circle, which resulted in a 4-2 Sonoma State victory after another late rally.Â

Tomorrow, Cal Poly Humboldt (10-16, 3-9 CCAA) will play the second day of a doubleheader as they take on No. 13 Sonoma State (20-4, 14-3 CCAA) for games three and four of the CCAA series. Game times are set for 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM from Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park, Calif.Â
