AZUSA, Calif. -- A few members of the Cal Poly Humboldt Track and Field team headed to Azusa Pacific University over the weekend to compete in the "Last Chance" meet in hopes to better their times and qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships the final weekend of May in Pueblo, Colorado.
Aris Valerio, previously ranked 22nd nationally in the 800m, ran a 1:49.43 on Friday and unofficially moved up to 11th nationally after his impressive performance. After the weekend concluded and the dust settled, Valerio ranked at 17th for the 800m and has a great chance to qualify for nationals when the selections release on Tuesday afternoon. Valerio's PR comes just a week after earning a silver medal and an All-Conference nod in the 800m at the CCAA Championships in San Marcos.
"Aris was the big highlight of this weekend and he moved up significantly in the National rankings," stated Head Coach
Sarah Ingram.
Joy Hano competed this weekend in the 100m hurdles and finished with a time of 14.22. Hano, who also earned a silver medal and All-Conference nod at the CCAA Championships last weekend, previously ran a 13.96 this season and is ranked 23rd nationally after the weekend. Hano also ran in the 100m dash with a time of 12.22.
Isabel Perez-Zoghbi ran the 400m Hurdles in a time of 1:02.82, which was the 8th fastest Division II time at the meet. Her previous time of 1:00.54 puts her at 19th nationally in a very deep 400m Hurdle pool for nationals.
Ingram said, "Since the rankings have updated from meets this weekend, Aris is now ranked #17, Isabel is #19, and Joy is #23. They have all been declared for NCAA's and we'll know Tuesday who is accepted!"
Others who competed over the weekend were
Harold Singh (100m dash - 10.85, 200m dash - 22.12),
Grant Van Emmerik (400m dash - 48.15), and
Dominic Raffetto (1500m - 4:01.01).
