ARCATA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer team hosted the No. 13 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos at College Creek Field on Friday afternoon to kick-off California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Lumberjacks fell to the nationally ranked Broncos with a final score of 2-0. Pomona remains undefeated at 5-0-2 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA. Humboldt drops to an even 3-3-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Less than a minute into the match, Humboldt had the first scoring opportunity when
Duke Romanchak put a ball on target but was saved by the Bronco keeper. At the 16:18 mark, Mads Frederiksen deflected a ball off of the left post that found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season on an assist from Paul Roger Henschke. Pomona led 8-2 in shots (2-1 on target) at the half, and 7-0 in corner kicks, resulting in a 1-0 Bronco lead.
The Broncos added to their lead at the 51:57 mark to make it a 2-0 advantage when Sam Lena converted on an assist from Jasper Winslow. The 13
th ranked Pomona back line proved to be tough for the Jacks in the second half. In the 85
th minute,
Dylan Vega posted a late attempt to get Humboldt on the board, but his shot on goal was saved by the Bronco keeper.
The Lumberjacks will host another ranked team to close out opening weekend for conference play as No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino comes to town this Sunday, October 1 for a 12:30 PM kick-off at College Creek Field. It is Youth Soccer Day for Cal Poly Humboldt Soccer. Kids will receive a poster and have the opportunity to get autographs from the players after the match.
