Jacks Take Set From No.14 Colorado Mesa To Open Tournament

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Cal Poly Humboldt women's volleyball opened the Colorado Mesa Volleyball Invitational on Thursday evening against the host team, No. 14 Colorado Mesa. The Lumberjacks took the Mavericks to four sets and fell with a final score of 3-1. Awelina Fakalata notched her first double-double of the season with a season-high 22 kills (.421 hitting percentage) and 11 digs.

"Taking a set off a 14th ranked team shows how much growth we have made in one year," said head coach Angela Spoja. "We have definitely cleaned up our game and with some minor tweaks we will be competing with the top teams in our conference. Kyra had 12 assists per set tonight, and our blocking was on fire. Fakalata has shown a lot of growth since our first match and continues to get better. Avery McIntyre had a heck of a night and we need to continue to get her the ball more. Graysen Trupp came in and gave us four blocks right off the bat and that fired up our team! I believe it was the right move for us to play top teams out of the gate to see where we stand, and I like where we stand this early in the season."

Match Summary
The Jacks fell behind 18-12 in set one before they turned up the heat and went on a huge run to outscore the Mavericks 11-3 and go up 23-21. With a set one victory in Humboldt's sights, No. 14 Colorado Mesa took advantage of a couple of attack errors and scored on a kill themselves to take set one 27-25 and hold off on the threat of the Lumberjacks. Humboldt jumped out in front early of set two and went up as much as nine points (16-7). The Jacks made a statement in set two and responded with a 25-22 victory despite a late attempt of a comeback from the Mavericks. Sets three and four had identical scores, 25-20 in favor of No. 14 Colorado Mesa. Humboldt held strong in the final two sets but the Mavericks went on to prove their ranking and closed the match out with a final score of 3-1.
