Impressive Comeback Falls Short at Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt faced off against a top of the conference team in Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday evening from the Torodome in Southern California. Looking to pick up their first CCAA win and snap the Toro's four game winning streak in an upset on their home floor, an impressive comeback from 20 points down fell short in the end. Dominguez Hills pulled away in the final minute and defeated the Lumberjacks 71-61. Isaac Sowell was just shy of a double-double, as he posted eight points on 80% shooting and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

After falling behind to start the game, Liyongwei Xie scored five straight points for the Jacks to give them their first lead of the game, 10-9. Humboldt managed to keep the game within reach and found themselves down just six points with five minutes left to go in the first half. Dominguez Hills closed out the first half on a 16-6 run and went up 42-26 to hold a commanding lead.

Humboldt stated the second half slow, as their first basket didn't come until the 16:40 mark when Rob Diaz III converted on a jumper. The Toros extended their lead to 20 points, their largest of the game, and were up 48-28. The Lumberjacks created some momentum after stringing a few shots together and went on a 16-1 run that was capped off by a pair of three-pointers from Kareem Clark and Emanuel Steward, making it 49-44 Dominguez Hills. Humboldt fought hard and made it a one possession game with two minutes to go, but the Toros took advantage of some late turnovers and made their free-throws down the stretch as the Jacks were forced to foul. Dominguez Hills held off the second half Lumberjack comeback and won with a final score of 71-61.
