LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Despite a stellar defensive performance and an early lead, Cal Poly Humboldt (2-6-3, 1-3-1 CCAA) fell to No. 2 Cal State LA (8-0-2, 3-0-1 CCAA) by a score of 2-1 in a tightly contested match at University Stadium. The Lumberjacks led for over 70 minutes before conceding two goals in the final nine minutes of play.
Humboldt opened the scoring in the 15th minute when senior forward
Marcus Abdel-Malek netted his second goal of the season.
Dylan Vega set up the play with a sharp pass into the box, and Abdel-Malek fired a shot to the far post, beating the Cal State LA goalkeeper to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 advantage.
The Lumberjacks held strong defensively throughout the first half and into much of the second. Goalkeeper
Adrian Gallardo was a force between the posts, making nine saves on 21 shots, including several key stops to keep Humboldt in the lead.
However, the pressure from Cal State LA, the second-ranked team in the nation, intensified late in the match. The Golden Eagles finally broke through in the 82nd minute when Rene Cortez headed in a goal to level the score at 1-1. Just three minutes later, Cal State LA struck again, with Andrew Portis heading in the game-winner off a cross from Geovanni Antuna, sealing the comeback victory for the Golden Eagles.
Gallardo's nine saves marked one of his highest totals this season, as the Lumberjacks weathered a relentless 16-shot barrage in the second half alone. Humboldt was efficient on offense, with their lone shot on goal resulting in Abdel-Malek's score.
Humboldt finished the match with four corner kicks to Cal State LA's 10 and committed 13 fouls to the Golden Eagles' four. Two Lumberjacks,
Duke Romanchak and
Brandon Gutierrez, were issued cards in the second half.
Humboldt will return to action on Thursday at 4:30 PM when they face Stanislaus State (4-4-3, 0-2-2 CCAA) at
Warrior Stadium (Al Brenda Track) in Turlock, looking to bounce back after a hard-fought effort against one of the best teams in the nation.
