'Jacks Drop Hard-Fought Four-Set Match to Pioneers

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt (7-13, 3-9 CCAA) came up short in a closely contested battle against Cal State East Bay (10-10, 5-7 CCAA) at Pioneer Gymnasium on Saturday night. Despite a strong team effort, the 'Jacks were defeated by the Pioneers in four sets (25-22, 22-25, 27-29, 19-25).

The match opened with a promising first set for Cal Poly Humboldt, as they hit .342 with 17 kills, overpowering East Bay's .216 hitting percentage to secure a 25-22 set victory. The second set saw the Pioneers bounce back, capitalizing on the Jacks' eight attacking errors to edge out a 25-22 win and even the score. Humboldt continued to battle, but Cal State East Bay's consistency paid off as they took a close third set (29-27) and maintained momentum through the fourth (25-19).

Humboldt was led by Madyn Cervellera, who recorded a team-high 15 kills. Awelina Fakalata contributed 13 kills, along with 22 digs, notching her 11th double-double of the season, while Graysen Trupp added 11 kills to the effort. Setter Brielle Wilson showcased her playmaking with 43 assists and matched Kyra Slavik with one service ace. Defensive highlights included 22 digs from Fakalata, 14 digs by Cervellera, and 11 digs by Sophia Spoja.

The 'Jacks tallied 59 kills to East Bay's 55, and Humboldt was also effective at the net with 8 total blocks, led by Hollis Downing, who posted six blocks, and Fakalata with four. However, Cal State East Bay's efficiency, particularly in the fourth set with a .385 hitting percentage, proved decisive. The Pioneers were powered by Lexi Pagani's match-high 19 kills and Pi'ilani Carvalho's 28 assists. Defensively, Alexandria Gloria recorded 16 digs and was key for the Pioneers in their victory.
