Lumberjacks Honor 10 Seniors, Fall 3-1 to Cal State Monterey Bay

ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer team honored 10 seniors in front of a supportive crowd at College Creek Field on Sunday, celebrating the contributions and dedication of Adrian Gallardo, Ethan Conaty, Ernie Garza, Alex Lopez, Konnor Rowan, Marcus Abdel-Malek, Enrique Tiscareno, Brandon Gutierrez, Evan Ochoa, and Ryan Rutherford. Despite an inspired effort, the Lumberjacks fell 3-1 to the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters.

Senior Marcus Abdel-Malek provided a highlight for the Lumberjacks, scoring his third goal of the season in the 21st minute, assisted by fellow senior Alex Lopez. Abdel-Malek's early strike gave Humboldt a brief lead and ties him as the team's top scorer this season. However, Monterey Bay responded quickly, with Hugo Vargas-Rios finding the net twice in the first half to shift momentum in favor of the Otters.

The Otters extended their lead in the second half with an unassisted goal by Mason Ward, his sixth of the season. Humboldt's offense mounted a strong effort, especially in the second half, generating eight shots and three corner kicks, but ultimately could not break through the Otters' solid defense. Goalkeeper Adrian Gallardo made a series of critical saves, totaling eight in the game.

The match saw five cautions, including yellow cards for seniors Abdel-Malek and Conaty. As the Lumberjacks celebrated their senior class, the atmosphere reflected the team's gratitude for the leadership and commitment these players have shown throughout their careers.

With this loss, Humboldt moves to 3-8-4 overall and 2-5-2 in the CCAA, while Monterey Bay improved to 7-3-4 overall and 4-2-3 in conference play. The Lumberjacks will now prepare for their final regular-season fixtures on the road, aiming to close out the season on a high note.
