ARCATA, Calif. – In a thrilling Senior Day showdown at College Creek Field, Cal Poly Humboldt's
Emilie Wallin scored her first collegiate goal, securing a 1-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay. Wallin's game-winning strike in the 72nd minute propelled Humboldt to second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings and handed the Otters their first conference loss of the season. The Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer team honored seven seniors in front of a supportive crowd at College Creek Field on Sunday, celebrating the contributions and dedication of
Emma McChristie,
Erin Mohr,
Maya Davis,
Abby Borg,
Megan Janikowski,
Casey Martinez, and
Emilie Wallin.
The Lumberjacks and Otters engaged in a gritty, defense-driven contest throughout the first half, with each team managing limited scoring opportunities. Humboldt broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when Wallin, a senior celebrating her final season, netted her first career goal in unforgettable fashion. Her well-timed shot from distance was enough to seal the win and bring the crowd to their feet as she sent it just by the Otter keeper in the upper left corner.
This milestone victory not only marked Humboldt's fourth conference win of the season, improving their record to 7-6-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the CCAA, but it also made them the first team to hand Cal State Monterey Bay (5-1-7, 3-1-5 CCAA) a loss in conference play this season.
The Lumberjacks outshot the Otters 8-7, with both teams recording four shots on goal. Humboldt's defense stood strong throughout, with four goalkeeper saves from
Carson Thomson-Terrel contributing to the clean sheet, as the Otters applied increased pressure in the second half. Both teams battled hard, each drawing nine fouls.
"I'm so proud of the team and seniors today," stated head coach
Grant Landy. "We played with the right mentality from the opening whistle. That was as complete of a game as we have played all season. This group of seniors is very special to me. Many I have had for four or five years. Their growth and development as players and leaders has been fun to watch."
With this win, Cal Poly Humboldt is in prime position in the CCAA standings as they continue their push toward the postseason. The Lumberjacks will look to carry their momentum forward as they prepare for their upcoming road trip to SoCal.
