Cal Poly Humboldt Drops Tight Contest to Cal State East Bay in CCAA Opener, 1-0

ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt (3-4-1, 0-1-0 CCAA) fell short in a hard-fought battle against Cal State East Bay (5-2-1, 1-0-0 CCAA), losing 1-0 at College Creek Field on Friday afternoon in the conference opener. Despite generating several opportunities, the Lumberjacks were unable to find the back of the net, as a late goal by the Pioneers secured their victory.

"It was definetly a disappointing result but at the end of the day, East Bay capitalized on their chance and we did not," said head coach Grant Landy. "We will move forward and get ready for Sunday."

In front of a crowd of 210 at College Creek Field, both teams went scoreless in the first half, with Humboldt outshooting Cal State East Bay 4-2. The Pioneers had an early opportunity in the 10th minute when Mika Sayfurahman was awarded a penalty kick, but goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel made a crucial save to keep the game level.

The second half saw an increase in intensity, but the defenses continued to hold strong. The game's lone goal came in the 79th minute when Abigail Kern scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Morgan Keller. Despite Humboldt pressing for an equalizer, Pioneers goalkeeper Madison Dong made key saves, finishing with five for the match.

The Lumberjacks recorded eight shots, with five on target. Emma McChristie and Emilie Wallin led the attack with multiple attempts, but Dong was up to the task each time. Humboldt goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel made four saves to keep the Lumberjacks within striking distance.

Humboldt will look to bounce back in their next game as they continue CCAA play at home this Sunday at 2:00 PM for Youth Soccer Day.
