Final Results 

ATHERTON, Calif. — Cal Poly Humboldt men's wrestling team kicked off their 2024-25 season on Friday night in a dual matchup against Menlo College in Atherton. In their highly anticipated season opener, the Lumberjacks put up a hard-fought effort but ultimately fell to the Oaks with a final score of 38-7.

Humboldt saw standout performances from Josh Niewart (133) and Nathan Aguilar (141), each securing victories that kept the team competitive early on. Neiwert earned a win by decision, defeating Menlo's Noah Messman 10-5, while Aguilar followed suit with a decisive 8-2 victory over Logan Avina-Barajas, bringing the score to 7-5 in favor of Humboldt at that stage in the dual.

The evening began with a challenging matchup for Caleb Tatad (125), who faced off against Elijah Valencia from Menlo. Valencia earned a win by technical fall (22-4), setting the tone for Menlo. Humboldt wrestlers continued to battle, with Jayson Victoria (149) and Gil Mossberg (157) taking on tough opponents in Brant Porter and Ezekiel Lara, respectively. Porter claimed the victory by technical fall, and Lara added a major decision win for the Oaks.

Despite a resilient effort from Cole Zoller at 165, Menlo's John Quinonez took the win by decision. The Oaks then benefited from forfeits in the 174 and 184 weight classes, widening the lead. Menlo's Diego Morales later secured a pin against Humboldt's Manman Garner at 197, bringing the dual to 35-7. In the heavyweight division, Humboldt's Liam Clark battled hard, ultimately dropping a 7-0 decision to Cole Steketee to close out the night.

The Lumberjacks will continue competiton tomorrow (Nov. 2) at the Menlo Invitational in Atherton, with contests expected to last throughout the day.
