Lumberjack Wrestling Closes Season at NCAA Super Region VI Championships

Humboldt Places 13th Overall in Golden; Five 'Jacks Earn Victories on the Day

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Cal Poly Humboldt wrestling team capped its 2025 campaign at the NCAA Division II Super Region VI Championships, hosted in Golden, Colorado, finishing 13th overall in a competitive regional field.

Four Lumberjacks recorded victories on the day, highlighting the continued growth of a program that returned to competition last season under the leadership of head coaches Lennie Zalesky and Jim Zalesky. With the conclusion of the regional meet, the Zaleskys officially close out their coaching careers, leaving a lasting impact on Humboldt wrestling's resurgence.

133 – Isaiah Miller

Isaiah Miller opened his tournament in the championship bracket against Nebraska-Kearney's Zachary Ourada before bouncing back in the consolation round with an emphatic first-period fall over James Romero-Montoya of New Mexico Highlands in 1:23. Miller's pin marked one of Humboldt's four victories on the day and showcased his ability to score quickly in high-pressure situations.

141 – Darrell Nanpuya

Darrell Nanpuya put together one of Humboldt's strongest runs of the tournament at 141 pounds. After a narrow 4-1 tiebreaker loss in the opening round to CSU-Pueblo's Eddie Bowman, Nanpuya responded with back-to-back dominant consolation wins. He pinned Simon Fraser's Markus Lee in 2:42 and followed with an 18-2 technical fall over Fort Hays State's Kolton Field. Nanpuya's tournament run ended in a tightly contested 2-1 decision against Chadron State's Caleb Chaves in the consolation third round.

149 – Jayson Victoria

At 149 pounds, Jayson Victoria rebounded after a first-round loss with a fall over Western Colorado's Eyan Chavez in 4:44 during consolation action. Victoria's resilience added to the Jacks' team point total and reflected the fight shown throughout the lineup.

184 – Eric Ruiz-Cornelio

Competing at 184 pounds, Eric Ruiz-Cornelio narrowly dropped his opening bout in a 6-5 decision to Fort Hays State's Houston Frank. In the consolation bracket, Ruiz-Cornelio secured an 11-3 major decision over San Francisco State's Gavin Funk to earn Humboldt valuable team points before concluding his tournament against Simon Fraser's Owen Gudmundson.

Heavyweight – Carson Hatch

Carson Hatch advanced via bye into the quarterfinals at 285 pounds and later earned a first-period fall over Phillip Chobot of New Mexico Highlands in 1:08 in the consolation bracket. Hatch's win added to Humboldt's total of four wrestlers claiming victories during the regional.

Other Lumberjack Performances

At 125 pounds, Garen Keshishian competed in both the championship and consolation brackets, gaining valuable postseason experience against a deep regional field.

Joe Anthony Perez (157) battled through his bracket after receiving a bye in the consolation round, dropping a narrow 7-5 decision to Vanguard's Vince Partington.

Sam Weinberg (165) represented the Jacks at 165 pounds, while Nathan Vasquez (174) competed in a challenging 174-pound bracket. At 197 pounds, Micaiah Montalbin stepped onto the regional stage for Humboldt, continuing to build experience at one of the nation's toughest weights.

Collectively, the Lumberjacks demonstrated continued progress in just their second season back in NCAA Division II competition.

Building Momentum

Under the guidance of Lennie Zalesky and Jim Zalesky, Humboldt wrestling has made steady strides since the program's reinstatement last season. The foundation laid over the past two years has reestablished the Lumberjacks within the highly competitive Super Region VI landscape.

With four individual victories at this year's regional championship and a 13th-place team finish, the Jacks close the 2025 season with momentum and a strengthened core as the program looks ahead to its next chapter.

For Cal Poly Humboldt wrestling, the weekend in Golden marked both the end of a season and the close of a meaningful era — one defined by restoration, resilience, and renewed pride in Lumberjack wrestling.
