ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball team delivered a dramatic performance at Lumberjack Arena, securing their second consecutive win with a 63-61 triumph over Cal State East Bay. The Lumberjacks (3-5, 2-1 CCAA) overcame a slow start and capitalized on a clutch game-winning three-pointer from Kendall Pickford in the final seconds to seal the victory.
Pickford, who finished with 10 points, hit a crucial three-pointer with just seconds remaining, putting Humboldt ahead for good. The Jacks had trailed by as many as 11 points earlier in the game, but a 23-point final quarter powered them to a hard-fought win.
"What a game, I am incredibly proud of our team tonight for showing tremendous fight and grit," said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Our backs were against the wall but we stayed together and were resilient. So many big shots, big rebounds, and intense defense down the stretch. I'm extremely happy for the team for pulling out the win!"
The standout performance of the game came from senior guard Kaiija Lesane, who set a career-high with 24 points on 64.2 percent shooting (9-14 FG). Lesane was dominant on both ends of the court, contributing eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals while also hitting key shots, including a 5-for-7 performance from the free-throw line. Her scoring output was instrumental in keeping the Jacks within striking distance after a tough first half.
Kendall Pickford added 10 points, including the game-winner, and continued to show her clutch abilities. Freshman Riley Sanz also provided important minutes, contributing 2 points, 4 assists, and a strong defensive presence. Dailani Richardson added 10 points and Jadis Watson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Cal State East Bay (2-6, 1-2 CCAA) was led by Gwendilyn Aasland, who scored 16 points, and Sierra Morris, who added 16 points off the bench. Despite a solid effort from the Pioneers, including a strong 1st quarter, they were unable to hold off Humboldt's late surge.
In a game where both teams struggled from long range, Humboldt finished shooting just 27.6% from three-point range (8-of-29), but their defensive effort and rebounding (37-34) helped secure the victory. The Lumberjacks also dominated the bench points category, outscoring East Bay 37-21.
Humboldt will look to build on this momentum of two straight wins as they look for redemption against Chico State (7-1, 3-0 CCAA) next Saturday (December 14) in Chico. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
