Jacks Drop Overtime Heartbreaker at Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball couldn't escape The Wolves' Den with a victory on Thursday night, falling to Sonoma State 70-62 in an overtime heartbreaker. Despite leading for 37:50 of the game's 45 minutes, the Jacks couldn't withstand a late push by the Seawolves, who capitalized on clutch free-throw shooting and outscored Humboldt 10-2 in the extra period.

The Jacks (5-10, 4-5 CCAA) jumped out to a commanding 21-9 lead in the first quarter, thanks to sharp shooting and dominance on the boards. Kyori Lloyd anchored Humboldt's strong start, finishing the game with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Dylan Lovett led all Jacks with 18 points and added seven rebounds. Both Lloyd (16) and Lovett (18) tallied new career highs in the contest.

Sonoma State (6-8, 4-4 CCAA) struggled offensively in the first half, shooting just 14.3% in the second quarter. However, they clawed back after halftime, led by Jayme Blackard's game-high 24 points and Alysa Lopez's 21 points. The Seawolves were nearly perfect from the free-throw line, converting 25 of 27 attempts (92.6%), which proved pivotal in their comeback.

Humboldt's offensive struggles in overtime sealed their fate. After a solid fourth quarter where the Jacks shot 54.5% from the field, they went cold in the extra frame, missing all six of their field-goal attempts. Meanwhile, Sonoma State's efficiency in the paint and at the charity stripe tipped the scales.

Humboldt's bench provided a spark, contributing 33 points, with Marley Johnson and Dailani Richardson combining for 15. However, the Jacks were unable to convert their 46-38 rebounding advantage into consistent second-chance points, managing just one in the game.

Sonoma State's defense proved disruptive, forcing 20 turnovers and turning them into 24 points. The Seawolves' resiliency was highlighted by their 15 second-chance points, which kept them within striking distance before their late surge.

Cal Poly Humboldt will look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to face Cal State San Marcos (0-14, 0-8 CCAA) at 1:00 PM.

GAME NOTES:

  • Kyori Lloyd recorded her first double-double of the season.
  • Lovett and Lloyd both recorded new career-highs
  • Sonoma State's Jayme Blackard shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
  • The Jacks have now dropped their last four games at The Wolves' Den.
