POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt faced a tough challenge on the road Thursday evening, falling to nationally ranked No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona, 69-34, at Kellogg Arena. The Jacks move to 5-14 overall and 4-9 in CCAA play, while the Broncos improve to 17-2 overall and 12-1 in conference action.
Dailani Richardson led the Jacks with 13 points, shooting 4-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Dylan Lovett and Kaiija Lesane each added six points, with Lovett also securing a team-high eight rebounds. Humboldt battled on the glass, collecting 39 rebounds, but struggled offensively, shooting just 19.6% from the field.
The Broncos controlled the game early, jumping out to a 21-14 lead after the first quarter. Humboldt kept within striking distance in the second, trailing 33-23 at halftime. However, Pomona's defense tightened in the second half, limiting the Jacks to just 11 total points after the break.
Cal Poly Pomona's Kalaya Buggs led all scorers with 19 points, knocking down five three-pointers, while Sydney Nelson added 17 points and five steals. The Broncos capitalized on Humboldt's turnovers, converting 22 points off giveaways and dominating in transition.
Cal Poly Clash
For men's and women's basketball, the team that claims the most head-to-head wins in a given season will claim the full point toward the rivalry. If the teams split the season series (e.g. one to one), then each will receive half a point.
With a win for the Broncos on Thursday night, CPP women's basketball has claimed at least 0.5 points, as they are 2-0 head-to-head this season against the Jacks and could only possibly play Humboldt two more times in the CCAA and NCAA Tournament. This means the Broncos currently own 5.5 points out of the possible 10 in the rivalry, securing the inaugural Cal Poly Clash title.
