ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer honored senior Paris Ruiz prior to kickoff on Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field, but the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes spoiled the occasion with a 2-1 victory. Despite a strong second-half push and a goal from Robert Somerville, the Jacks came up just short in their CCAA matchup.
The Coyotes (7-2-4, 2-1-2 CCAA) struck early with two goals in the opening 23 minutes. Anthony Morales put CSUSB on the board in the 20th minute off a feed from Tony Negrete, and Damian Gonzalez doubled the lead shortly after with assists from Negrete and Rafa Fonseca.
Humboldt (2-9-1, 0-5-0 CCAA) regrouped at halftime and controlled more of the possession in the second half. The pressure paid off in the 71st minute when Somerville connected for his second goal of the season, finishing off a setup from Dominik Chipp and Shota Lam. The Jacks continued to search for the equalizer, generating two corner kicks and several attacking chances, but couldn't find the back of the net before the final whistle.
Goalkeepers Edwin Monterrosa and Alvaro Nieves combined for eight saves, holding the Coyotes scoreless after halftime.
Cal Poly Humboldt now heads on the road for four of its final five matches to close out the regular season. The Jacks travel south next weekend to face Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, October 24 at 7:00 PM, followed by a Sunday matchup at Cal State Los Angeles on October 26 at 2:00 PM.
