LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer team showed tremendous resilience Sunday afternoon, storming back from a two-goal halftime deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against (RV) Cal State LA at University Stadium. The result marks a hard-fought point on the road for the Jacks, who improved to 2-10-2 overall and 0-6-1 in CCAA play.
After a difficult first half, Humboldt found its rhythm late in the match and capitalized on a pair of clutch goals in the final 15 minutes.
Cal State LA struck first in the 13th minute when Erick Alamo headed home a cross from Felix Alverdale. The Golden Eagles doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute on a stunning free kick from Geovanni Antuna that curled into the upper corner, sending the hosts into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The Jacks, however, refused to back down. In the 79th minute, Luke Gomes cut the deficit in half, finishing calmly to the left post after a perfect feed from Lucas Carballo on a two-on-one break. The momentum continued to build, and just nine minutes later, Shota Lam delivered the equalizer — curling a brilliant free kick just outside the box into the net in the 88th minute to complete the comeback.
Goalkeeper Edwin Monterrosa kept Humboldt in the game throughout the afternoon, making 10 saves against 18 Cal State LA shots. The Jacks recorded eight total shots, four of which were on target, while also earning four corner kicks.
