ARCATA, Calif. -- In a thrilling finish to their final home match of the 2025 season, Cal Poly Humboldt battled to a 3–3 draw against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field. A stunning last-second free kick from Shota Lam brought the crowd to its feet and capped off a spirited performance by the Lumberjacks.
The result moves the Jacks to 2-11-3 overall (0-7-2 CCAA), while the Otters stand at 4-8-3 overall (1-6-3 CCAA).
First-Half Firepower
The Lumberjacks came out sharp, scoring twice in quick succession midway through the first half.

In the 26th minute, Cooper Stephens netted his first goal of the season, finishing off an assist from Luke Gomes to give Humboldt the early edge.

Just over a minute later, Robert Somerville doubled the lead with his third of the year, thanks to a well-placed pass from Shota Lam.
Monterey Bay responded in the 29th minute through Eric Vazquez-Acosta, cutting the deficit to 2–1 heading into the break.
Otters Rally, Jacks Respond
The Otters found their rhythm after halftime, as Will Seargeant equalized in the 63rd minute, followed by Jack Dawson's go-ahead strike in the 80th to make it 3–2 in favor of the visitors.
But the Lumberjacks refused to back down. With time winding down and Humboldt pressing forward, a foul just outside the box gave the Jacks one last chance. In the 90th minute, Lam stepped up and perfectly placed a right-footed free kick in the bottom corner—his second goal of the season—to send the home crowd into celebration and secure the dramatic draw.
By the Numbers
Humboldt outshot Monterey Bay 18–15, including 7 shots on goal to the Otters' 8.
Goalkeeper Alvaro Nieves made five saves in a strong effort between the posts.
Stephens led the way offensively with five shots (four on target), while Lam contributed a goal and an assist in the all-around performance that defined the match.
Looking Ahead
The Lumberjacks wrap up their 2025 campaign on the road this Thursday, November 6, against Chico State. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. in Chico, Calif.
