Late Surge Not Enough as Humboldt Falls to Western Oregon

ARCATA, Calif. — A furious second half rally brought the Lumberjacks within one possession in the final seconds, but Cal Poly Humboldt's comeback effort ultimately fell just short in a 74–71 setback to Western Oregon on Saturday afternoon inside Lumberjack Arena.

Despite trailing by as many as 16 in the second half, the 'Jacks (3–4, 2–0 CCAA) outscored the Wolves 25–16 in the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie the game late. A strong defensive stand gave Humboldt the ball back with under 10 seconds to play, but the potential game-tying shot rimmed out as Western Oregon (7–3, 2–0 GNAC) escaped with the narrow win.

Standout Performances Drive Humboldt's Push

Jordyn Smith delivered a commanding performance, pouring in 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting, while pulling down eight rebounds, dishing five assists, recording four blocks and two steals in a full 40-minute effort. Smith fueled the fourth-quarter surge, attacking the rim relentlessly as Humboldt fought back.

Jada Barnes added an explosive spark of her own, posting 20 points on an efficient 8-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. She drew key fouls, pushed the tempo, and kept Humboldt within striking distance early before the late rally materialized.

Shade Satica continued her steady two-way production, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals across 38 minutes. Satica knocked down a pair of threes and provided key defensive stops that ignited momentum in the second half.

Sienna Cherwinski put together a strong floor game with eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and a team-high five steals, helping create extra possessions that kept Humboldt alive late in the contest.

Game Flow

The Wolves came out firing, shooting over 57 percent in the opening quarter to take a 22–18 advantage. Humboldt struggled from deep in the second period, going 0-for-7 from three, allowing Western Oregon to extend its lead to 12 at the break.

The 'Jacks began to chip away in the third, sparked by threes from Satica and Cherwinski, before erupting in the fourth quarter with their highest-scoring frame of the afternoon. Humboldt shot nearly 58 percent in the final period and forced several turnovers to climb back into the game.

Western Oregon's Kylani Rookstool led all scorers with 26 points, while Triniti Youngblood contributed 17 for the Wolves.
