SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal Poly Humboldt put together a strong second-half push, but ultimately came up short in a 64–56 loss to Cal State San Marcos on Friday night at The Sports Center.
The Lumberjacks (3-6, 1-2 CCAA) trailed 32–26 at the break before tightening the game after halftime, cutting the deficit to single digits multiple times. Humboldt showed resilience throughout the final 20 minutes, but San Marcos capitalized at the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
Wayne Hampton III led all Lumberjacks with a new career-high 16 points off the bench, including an impressive 14 points in the second half. Hampton provided a spark on both ends of the floor, attacking the basket and knocking down timely shots to keep Humboldt within striking distance.
Shakir Odunewu had strong play in the paint, finishing with 13 points on an efficient 5-for-7 shooting night while pulling down eight rebounds. Odunewu narrowly missed a double-double and added three assists, anchoring the Jacks' interior presence.
Brandon Bento-Jackson, Dorrell Thomas, and Tyriq McNeal each chipped in eight points, with McNeal also grabbing five rebounds and going 6-for-9 from the free throw line.
Cal State San Marcos was led by Keavie Love's 16 points and Dexter Stratton's 15 points and nine rebounds. The Cougars converted 19-of-27 free throws, including 16 in the second half, to maintain control late.
Cal Poly Humboldt returns to CCAA action on Sunday, traveling to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Kelp Bed.
