HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The Cal Poly Humboldt softball team continued its strong start to the 2025 season, sweeping Chaminade University in a dominant doubleheader performance on Friday at Silversword Field. With the victories, the Lumberjacks improved to 5-1 on the season.
Game 1 - Cal Poly Humboldt 13, Chaminade 1 (5 Innings)
The Lumberjacks opened the day with a commanding 13-1 victory over Chaminade in five innings, backed by an explosive offensive showing and a stellar outing from starting pitcher Gaige Garcia (2-0).
Humboldt wasted no time setting the tone, plating two runs in the first inning on a two-RBI double by Alyssa Smokey. The lead extended in the second as Bella Garcia's RBI single and Hailey Moore's bunt single pushed the score to 4-0.
After Chaminade managed to score its only run in the third, Humboldt responded with a two-run fourth inning, once again led by Smokey, who delivered her second two-RBI double of the game.
The floodgates opened in the fifth, as Humboldt erupted for seven runs, capitalizing on key hits from Garcia, Smokey, and Vanessa Saltos. Smokey finished with a game-high six RBIs, while Moore and Shelby Shanks each scored three runs.
Garcia earned the win in the circle, allowing just one run on three hits over four innings, while Rayna Ponce closed out the game with a scoreless fifth inning.
Game 2 - Cal Poly Humboldt 7, Chaminade 5 (9 Innings)
In a hard-fought second game, Humboldt pulled away in extra innings for a 7-5 victory in nine frames.
Chaminade struck first, scoring in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead. The Lumberjacks responded in the third when Smokey's two-RBI single, paired with a double from Julia Rivera, gave Humboldt a 3-2 advantage.
The game remained tight, with Chaminade tying the score at 3-3 in the sixth inning on an RBI triple. The teams battled through a scoreless stretch until Humboldt broke through in the ninth.
A clutch RBI double by Bella Garcia started a four-run ninth-inning rally. Lauren Asia, Smokey, and Rivera each added RBI hits to extend the lead to 7-3. Chaminade attempted a late comeback but fell short, securing the sweep for the Lumberjacks.
Riley Shopp (1-0) earned the win in relief, closing out the game with two scoreless innings.
