Humboldt Stings the Yellowjackets in Wednesday Sweep

LOLETA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt softball showcased its firepower in a dominant doubleheader sweep over MSU Billings on Wednesday at Bear River Complex. The Jacks (14-7) erupted for a nine-run fourth inning in game one to fuel a 12-4 run-rule victory before rallying in game two behind Katlyn Gifford's walk-off home run for an 8-6 win. With the sweep, Humboldt extended its winning streak to three games and continued its strong start to the season.

Cal Poly Humboldt Softball Run Rules MSU Billings in Game One of Doubleheader

Cal Poly Humboldt (13-7) put on an explosive offensive performance in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, run-ruling MSU Billings (3-12) with a dominant 12-4 victory in five innings at Bear River Complex.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Jacks erupted for nine runs in the inning before adding three more in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory. Riley Shopp (2-1) earned the win in relief, holding the Yellowjackets scoreless over 1.1 innings.

Key Performances:

  • Julia Rivera crushed a three-run homer in the fourth, capping off the Jacks' nine-run inning.
  • Shelby Shanks went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
  • Katlyn Gifford added a two-run double in the fifth and finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Bella Garcia continued to spark the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, a triple, and a stolen base.
  • Hailey Meisenbach delivered a clutch two-RBI single in the fourth to tie the game.

MSU Billings struck early, plating two runs in the first and adding two more in the fourth. However, the Jacks responded emphatically with a relentless offensive surge, tallying 14 hits while playing error-free defense.

Shopp relieved Gaige Garcia, who pitched 3.2 innings, striking out three while allowing four runs on five hits. Humboldt's defensive efficiency and pitching adjustments proved key in halting MSU Billings' momentum.

Gifford's Walk-Off Homer Lifts Cal Poly Humboldt to Doubleheader Sweep Over MSU Billings

In thrilling fashion, Katlyn Gifford delivered a walk-off home run down the right-field line to lift Cal Poly Humboldt to an 8-6 victory over MSU Billings in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Bear River Complex. The Jacks (14-7) rallied in their final at-bat to secure the sweep and extend their winning streak to three games.

The game opened with the Yellowjackets (3-13) striking early, plating two runs in the top of the first. However, Humboldt quickly responded in the bottom half with Hailee Moore's RBI single and Shelby Shanks' run-scoring hit to even the score at 2-2.

Shanks continued her stellar performance in the third inning, launching a two-run home run to left field to put the Jacks ahead 4-2. MSU Billings cut into the deficit in the fourth with a bases-loaded walk before Shanks answered again, ripping an RBI double to extend the lead to 5-3.

The Yellowjackets made a late push in the sixth, capitalizing on an error and a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5. They added another run on a single, taking a 6-5 advantage. The Jacks showed resilience as Moore came around to score on an error in the bottom half, knotting the game once more at 6-6.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Vanessa Saltos reached base before Gifford stepped to the plate and launched a two-run shot to right to clinch the walk-off win.

Key Performances:

Cal Poly Humboldt's pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts, with Riley Shopp and Alyssa Smokey handling the bulk of the innings before Hatton secured the win in relief.

The Jacks will look to carry their momentum into their next series, as they prepare for a weekend matchup at home against Cal State Monterey on Friday and Saturday.
