ARCATA, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball team put up a gritty fight Friday evening but came up short in a five-set thriller against Jessup, falling 3–2 (25–17, 16–25, 17–25, 25–22, 9–15) in their lone match of the day at the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic inside Lumberjack Arena.
The 'Jacks (0-7, 0-0 CCAA) came out strong in the opening set, hitting .250 while holding Jessup to just .083 to claim a 25–17 win. The Warriors (2-1, 0-0 PacWest) responded with back-to-back victories in sets two and three, leaning on an efficient attack led by Addie Hamilton (19 kills), Kemyah Harris (17 kills), and Eliana Sheridan (16 kills).
With their backs against the wall, Humboldt rallied in set four. Behind a balanced offensive effort and the defensive presence of libero Sophia Spoja (18 digs), the Lumberjacks forced a decisive fifth set with a 25–22 win.
Jessup, however, proved too strong down the stretch. The Warriors hit .300 in the final frame while limiting the 'Jacks to a negative percentage, securing the match 15–9.
Despite the loss, Humboldt saw strong contributions across the board. Addison Bookstaber led the attack with 14 kills, while Rahni Greene added nine kills and three blocks. Setter Claire Crawford dished out 20 assists and chipped in nine digs, and Spoja anchored the defense with a team-high 18 digs.
As a team, Jessup held the edge in kills (64–48), assists (59–41), and digs (70–64), while Humboldt recorded five service aces to the Warriors' four.
The Lumberjacks will return to action Saturday at 4:30 p.m. when they face Dominican (0-7), with both teams looking to capture their first victory of the 2025 season.
