Lumberjacks Push Cal State LA to the Brink in Five-Set CCAA Opener

ARCATA, Calif. – In front of a loud and energetic crowd of nearly 300 fans inside Lumberjack Arena, Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball opened California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with a five-set thriller against (RV) Cal State LA on Thursday night. Despite strong performances across the board, the Golden Eagles narrowly edged the Jacks, 3-2 (25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 21-25, 9-15).

The loss drops Humboldt to 0-9 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA, while Cal State LA improves to 5-3 and 1-0 in conference play.

The Jacks came out firing in the opening frame, hitting .406 as a team while matching the Golden Eagles kill-for-kill (15 apiece). Humboldt fed off the home crowd to claim the first set 25-21. After LA evened the match with a strong second set, the Jacks bounced back behind a balanced attack to take set three, 25-20, and put themselves one frame away from their first win of the season.

But the visitors responded, edging Humboldt in a tightly contested fourth set before closing the decisive fifth with efficient hitting to seal the match.

Statistical Leaders

  • Kills: Graysen Trupp led the way with 14 kills on an efficient .297 hitting percentage, while Isabella Hartwig added 11 kills and Phoebe Bland chipped in seven with a team-high .353 hitting percentage.

  • Defense: Senior libero Sophia Spoja anchored the back row with 17 digs, supported by Kendall Fenstermacher (12) and Claire Crawford (10).

  • Playmaking: Brielle Wilson paced the offense with 23 assists, while Crawford added 16 more.

  • At the net: Bland was a force with five blocks, followed by Trupp (3) and Rahni Greene (2).

  • Service line: Emma Fauth and Crawford each tallied three aces to keep Humboldt's serve aggressive throughout the night.

Overall, Humboldt finished with 53 kills, eight aces, and 70 points, pushing one of the CCAA's toughest opponents to the wire.

The Jacks will look to carry the momentum from Thursday's spirited performance into their next matchup, continuing CCAA play at home on Saturday at 2:00 PM versus (RV) Cal Poly Pomona.
