ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball hosted the first matchup of the annual Cal Poly Clash on Saturday afternoon in Lumberjack Arena, squaring off against (RV) Cal Poly Pomona in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup. Despite a strong opening set and a spirited crowd of 171, the Lumberjacks fell 3–0 (21-25, 17-25, 15-25) to the Broncos.
With the loss, Humboldt moves to 0-10 overall and 0-2 in CCAA play, while Pomona evens its record at 4-4 and improves to 2-0 in the conference.
The opening set saw Humboldt hang tough behind steady attacking from Graysen Trupp, who led the Jacks with 9 kills on the afternoon. The home team tallied 10 kills in the first frame and kept pressure on Pomona before the Broncos edged out the 25-21 win.
From there, the visitors' efficiency at the net proved to be the difference. Pomona hit .345 in the second set and .240 in the third, finishing the match with a .269 hitting percentage compared to Humboldt's .023.
Humboldt was led offensively by Trupp (9 kills), with support from Isabella Hartwig (4) and Emma Fauth (3). At the service line, Brielle Wilson provided a spark with 3 aces, while Phoebe Bland and Kendall Fenstermacher each added 2. Bland also controlled the net defensively, posting 3 blocks.
Defensively, Humboldt was anchored by Sophia Spoja with 12 digs, while Wilson (10) and Claire Crawford (8) chipped in. Wilson and Crawford also paced the Lumberjack setters with 8 assists apiece.
For Pomona, Sarah Ybarra led all players with 14 kills, while setter Kacie Caoili dished out 27 assists.
The Jacks will continue CCAA play next week, as they hit the road to take on UC Merced and Stanislaus State in the Central Valley beginning Thursday.
