MERCED, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt women's volleyball (0-11, 0-3 CCAA) fought hard in a competitive match on Friday evening against UC Merced (3-9, 2-1 CCAA), but came up just short, falling 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 21-25). The Lumberjacks showed grit throughout the night, highlighted by a dominant second set and a career performance from junior Graysen Trupp.
After dropping the opening set, Humboldt responded in commanding fashion with a 25-18 victory in the second frame. The 'Jacks executed a balanced attack and tightened up defensively, forcing UC Merced into several attack errors to even the match at one set a piece.
The third set proved to be the turning point. Both teams traded points in a back-and-forth battle, but the Bobcats narrowly pulled away late to win 25-23. UC Merced then carried that momentum into the fourth set, holding off a late Humboldt push to close out the match.
The Lumberjacks finished with 51 kills, highlighted by Graysen Trupp's career-best 22 kills, the most by a Humboldt player in a single match since October 10 of last season (Fakalata, 26). The 'Jacks also compiled six service aces and a .252 hitting percentage during the contest.
