SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer team struck in the second half but could not overcome an early deficit, falling 4–1 to Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday night at Cardinale Stadium.
The Lumberjacks (2-4-1) showed resilience after going down two goals in the first half. The Otters (3-2-0) opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Ramiro Corrales Jr. converted a penalty kick, followed by Eric Vazquez-Acosta doubling the lead in the 25th minute.
Humboldt fought back after the break and broke through in the 73rd minute. Freshman Luke Gomes tallied his first career goal for the Jacks, finishing a chance to cut the deficit to 2–1 and swing momentum toward the visitors.
Just as Humboldt looked to climb back, Monterey Bay responded with goals in the 78th and 81st minutes from Vazquez-Acosta and Omar Arechiga-Martinez to put the match out of reach.
Offensively, Humboldt generated 12 shots, placing six on frame. Nathan Murff led the team with four attempts, while Gomes and Dominik Chipp each registered shots on target. In goal, Benjamin McDonald recorded three saves while playing the full 90 minutes.
The match was physical throughout, with both sides combining for 23 fouls and six cautions.
Cal Poly Humboldt will continue their non-conference Bay Area road trip on Saturday, taking on Lincoln Universtiy in Vallejo at Bodnar Field for an 11:00 AM kickoff.
