Neiwert Goes 3-0 as Lumberjacks Face Nationally Ranked Field at Tracy Borah Duals

GUNNISON, Colo. — Cal Poly Humboldt Wrestling tested itself against elite national competition on Saturday at the 35th Annual Tracy Borah Duals, hosted by Western Colorado, facing three formidable opponents in #18 Colorado Mesa, (RV) Western Colorado, and #16 Adams State.

The Lumberjacks came up short in all three duals, but the day was highlighted by a standout performance from Josh Neiwert (133 pounds), who went a perfect 3-0 against quality opposition, anchoring Humboldt's efforts throughout the day.

vs. #18 Colorado Mesa

Colorado Mesa capitalized on bonus-point victories to secure a 49-5 team win in the opening dual. Neiwert provided the bright spot for the Lumberjacks, rolling to a 15-0 technical fall over Murphy Harris at 133 pounds in just over five minutes. Despite Humboldt's efforts, the Mavericks controlled the remainder of the dual with multiple falls across the lineup.

vs. (RV) Western Colorado

Humboldt responded with its strongest team performance of the day, battling Western Colorado to a competitive 27-21 decision. The Lumberjacks claimed four victories in the dual, highlighted by a trio of falls.

The Lumberjacks stayed within striking distance throughout the dual, showcasing resilience against a receiving-votes opponent.

vs. #16 Adams State

Humboldt closed the day against another nationally ranked program in Adams State, falling 37-6. Neiwert capped his unbeaten day with a hard-fought 4-1 decision over John Provencio at 133 pounds. Eric Ruiz-Cornelio (184) also picked up a signature win, earning a 4-2 decision over Mahkyi Smith to account for Humboldt's other points in the dual.

Notable Performances

The Lumberjacks will take valuable experience from the weekend as they continue to measure themselves against some of the top programs in Division II. Up next, Cal Poly Humboldt will host Menlo College for a dual in Lumberjack Arena on Friday, January 16 at 7:00 PM.
