TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt men's track & field team turned in several strong performances Saturday at the Kim Duyst Invitational, highlighted by event victories and multiple top-five finishes.
The Lumberjacks were led by event wins from Joseph Gonzalez in the men's shot put and Michael Payan in the men's pole vault while Humboldt added podium finishes across the sprints, throws, and jumps.
FIELD
Humboldt's field athletes delivered several of the team's top performances of the meet.
Junior Joseph Gonzalez won the shot put with a throw of 16.35m (53-7¾), setting a new Cal Poly Humboldt outdoor school record in the event. The mark breaks the previous record of 53-7¾ set 33 years ago by Hall of Famer and football/track standout Rodney Dickerson. Gonzalez also turned in an outstanding series during the competition, including another throw of 16.34m, and his winning mark currently ranks No. 1 in the CCAA this season. Gonzalez also placed fourth in the discus with a mark of 44.95m (147-5).
Teammate Benjamin Feldstein finished eighth in the discus with a throw of 41.67m (136-8), while Ruari Mulrey added a mark of 38.52m (126-4).
Senior Michael Payan captured the pole vault title after clearing 4.85m (15-11). Humboldt added depth in the event with Justin Vigna finishing third at 4.40m (14-5¼) and freshman Kai Matsuura placing fourth with a clearance of 4.10m (13-5¼).
Freshman Alexander Dillon placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 1.90m (6-2¾).
In the javelin, senior Damian Greenwood finished fourth with a throw of 47.11m (154-6), while AJ Perez added a mark of 41.45m (136-0). In the hammer throw, Adam Gomez and Benjamin Feldstein placed eighth and ninth with throws of 46.34m and 45.48m, respectively.
TRACK
Freshman Cameron Bishop led Humboldt on the track with a third-place finish in the 400 meters, running 49.30. Bishop also placed sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.85.
The Lumberjacks' 4x100 relay (Paul Domingue III, Bennett Feldenkirchen, Adam Smith, Cameron Bishop) finished fourth in 41.35 and now hold the 5th best mark all-time in program history.
In the 100 meters, Alonzo Paul paced Humboldt with a 10.90, while Adam Smith, Thomas Clark, and Jamie Saunders each posted times just over 11 seconds.
Humboldt added several strong finishes in the 200 meters, including Saunders (22.20), Paul (22.39), Joey Bowser (22.59), Clark (22.68), and Smith (22.71).
Jevon Cloy placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.99.
In the middle-distance events, Saul Jimenez led the Lumberjacks with a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters at 1:57.79, while Kees Van Der Meer, Orlando Soriano, and Jose Cota also competed in the event.
Senior Jonah Grubbs paced Humboldt in the 1500 meters, finishing 11th with a time of 4:09.90.

Cal Poly Humboldt continues its outdoor season next week as the Lumberjacks will head to Chico, Calif. for the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 14.
