Humboldt collects multiple event wins, personal bests in Ashland

ASHLAND, Ore. – Cal Poly Humboldt men's track & field turned in a strong all-around performance at the Raider Invitational, hosted by Southern Oregon University on April 17–18, highlighted by multiple event victories, personal bests, and a relay sweep across the two-day meet.


Day 1: Stewart, Paul lead early momentum

The Lumberjacks opened the meet with standout performances on Friday, headlined by Trevor Stewart's victory in the 3000-meter steeplechase. The sophomore clocked a personal-best time of 9:46.06, taking the top spot and setting the tone for Humboldt's distance crew.

On the track, Alonzo Paul continued his strong senior campaign with a first-place finish in the 200 meters, crossing in 22.01. Teammate Thomas Clark added to the momentum with a personal-best 22.32, placing fifth overall.

Humboldt also saw solid efforts in the field events, beginning to build depth heading into Saturday's slate.


Day 2: Relay sweep, mid-distance dominance highlight finale

Saturday belonged to the Lumberjacks, who showcased depth and versatility across sprints, distance, and field events.

Humboldt swept the relays, beginning with a first-place finish in the 4x100 relay as the quartet of Paul, Clark, Adam Smith, and Aidan Shelton combined for a winning time of 41.90. The Jacks followed with a strong showing in the 4x400 relay, where their "A" squad of Lucas Garin, Zachary Blood, Rylan Huryn, and Bryce Pearson posted a 3:22.01.

In the sprints, Paul doubled back with a season-best 10.83 in the 100 meters, marking the second-fastest time of his career. Smith (10.99), Clark (11.01), and Shelton (11.04) rounded out a deep Humboldt sprint group.

Zach Blood delivered a personal-best performance in the 400 meters, placing third in 49.67, while freshman Rylan Huryn added a sixth-place finish (50.62).

The Lumberjacks dominated the 800 meters, finishing first, second, and fourth.

Woolery also added a second-place finish in the 1500 meters (3:58.30), continuing his strong weekend.

In the hurdles, Jevon Cloy placed second in the 110 hurdles with a season-best 15.40.

Field events continued to be a strength for Humboldt:

  • Michael Payan won the pole vault with a clearance of 5.20m, securing another NCAA Division II provisional mark while showing consistency with multiple strong attempts at 5.40m.

  • Derek Ray claimed victory in the shot put (14.59m) and added a third-place finish in the discus (43.51m).

  • Adam Gomez recorded a personal-best 48.51m to win the hammer throw.

  • In the high jump, Alexander Dillon placed second (1.95m), with Gabriel Bondurant finishing fourth (1.90m).

Distance standout Jonah Grubbs added a third-place finish in the 5000 meters (15:36.90), while Humboldt's steeplechase group placed three in the top eight.

Cal Poly Humboldt will look to build on this momentum as the Lumberjacks now prepare for the CCAA Championships from April 30-May 2 in San Marcos.
