BERKELEY, Calif. — Junior Collin Friedman turned in a career-best decathlon  performance at the Brutus Hamilton Multi on April 2–3, scoring 6,680 points to  move from seventh to fourth on the Cal Poly Humboldt all-time Top 10 list and  finish fifth overall in a field that included NCAA Division I and DII competitors. 

Friedman's 278-point improvement over his previous best of 6,402 was powered by  a dominant pole vault performance. He cleared 4.60m (15' 1") to win the event  outright among all 18 decathletes — the only event win for a Lumberjack on the  day. He followed that with a second-place javelin throw of 52.47m (172' 2") to cap a  strong Day 2. His long jump mark of 6.71m (22' 0.25") placed him fourth in the  field, and his 110-meter hurdles time of 15.95 rounded out his top individual event  finishes. 

Friedman's 6,680-point total well exceeds the NCAA DII provisional qualifying  standard of 6,347 points, strengthening his case for a national championship berth.  He now trails only Teigan Eilers (6,908, 2017), Brian Belue (6,774, 2009), and Justin  Miller (6,721, 2002) on the CPH all-time list — with the #3 mark of 6,721 within  realistic striking distance as the season progresses. 

Senior Bryce Pearson, who sits sixth on the all-time list with his 2024 mark of  6,510, added a solid 6,272-point effort to finish ninth. Pearson showed his  versatility with a fourth-place 400m (50.38) and fifth-place 110m hurdles (15.73),  and matched Friedman with the top CPH time in the 100m at 11.24 seconds. 

The two Lumberjacks competed in a strong field topped by Cal's Luke Buddie (7,168  pts), with Chico State's Ronin Tidd (6,757) and Sacramento State's Blake Gross  (6,718) and Brock Gross (6,706) rounding out the top four ahead of Friedman. 

Cal Poly Humboldt now has two decathletes with NCAA DII provisional qualifying marks as the outdoor season heads toward conference competition.
