Lumberjacks Finish the Fight in Five-Set CCAA Opener

ARCATA, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball held off a Stanislaus State comeback to capture a five-set victory Thursday evening inside Lumberjack Arena, opening CCAA play with a 3-2 win.

The Lumberjacks won by set scores of 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 18-25 and 15-12 to improve to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Humboldt established control by taking the opening two sets. The Jacks recorded 13 kills in the first frame before hitting .233 with 16 kills in the second to build a 2-0 advantage.

Stanislaus State responded after the intermission, narrowly taking the third set 25-23 before forcing a deciding frame with a 25-18 victory in the fourth.

The Warriors carried their momentum into the fifth and took a 10-8 lead, but Humboldt answered when it mattered most. Kills from Isabella Hartwig and Kendall Fenstermacher brought the Jacks even before Tatyana Jennings helped Humboldt move in front.

Jennings added another kill to create match point, and Rahni Greene delivered the final block to complete the 15-12 victory. Humboldt scored seven of the match's final nine points.

Phoebe Bland led the Lumberjacks with 12 kills while hitting .318 and added three solo blocks. Jennings provided a spark with 11 kills, only one error and a match-best .526 hitting percentage across three sets.

Branson Lennon finished with seven kills, 19 digs and one service ace, while Fenstermacher contributed eight kills and 16 digs. Elizabeth Jade Andrade anchored the defense with a match-high 21 digs and added two aces.

Brielle Wilson recorded 24 assists and two service aces, while Claire Crawford contributed 17 assists and eight digs.

Humboldt finished with a 60-53 advantage in kills, a 94-88 edge in digs and eight total blocks. The Lumberjacks also recorded six service aces while limiting the Warriors to two.

The victory gives Humboldt a winning start to CCAA competition and extends its home record to 2-2.

UP NEXT

The Lumberjacks will host rival Chico State on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. inside Lumberjack Arena for Lumberjack Night.
