ARCATA, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer erupted for three goals over a 13-minute span in the second half to defeat Menlo 3-0 Friday afternoon at College Creek Field. The victory gave the Lumberjacks a winning start to both their home and CCAA schedules.
Following a scoreless opening half,
Izaiah Grosveld broke through from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. Grosveld converted the opportunity to give Humboldt a 1-0 advantage and ignite the decisive stretch.
The Lumberjacks doubled their lead in the 77th minute when
Seth Uson found the back of the net off assists from
Luke Gomes and Grosveld. Uson's finish came less than seven minutes after the opening goal.
Grosveld completed the scoring with his second penalty-kick goal of the afternoon in the 83rd minute, extending Humboldt's advantage to 3-0. He finished the match with five points on two goals and an assist.
Humboldt generated all eight of its shots after halftime and placed five attempts on target. Menlo finished with six shots but managed only one on frame.
Alvaro Nieves made one save to earn the shutout in goal. The Lumberjacks' defense held the Oaks without a shot on target during the second half to secure Humboldt's second clean sheet of the season.
The victory improved the Lumberjacks to 2-2-3 overall and 1-0 in CCAA play.
UP NEXT
The Lumberjacks will remain home to face Cal State East Bay on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. at College Creek Field. The match will be part of Youth Day.
