ARCATA, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer fell 4-1 to Cal State East Bay in CCAA action Sunday morning during Youth Day at College Creek Field.
The Lumberjacks were forced to play with 10 men for most of the match following a red card in the 10th minute. Cal State East Bay capitalized in the 27th minute when Bennett Richards scored to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
Humboldt entered halftime trailing by one before the Pioneers added three goals during a 14-minute stretch in the second half. Julian Valle scored in the 63rd minute, Alejandro Zarate followed in the 69th and Kiichi Murakami extended the margin to 4-0 in the 77th.
The Lumberjacks continued pushing forward despite the deficit and broke through in the 89th minute.
Dominic Calero set up
Izaiah Grosveld, who found the back of the net for his third goal in two matches.
Grosveld led Humboldt with six shots, placing two on target.
Harper Thweatt,
Nicholas Moore and Calero also registered shots on goal.
Cal State East Bay finished with a 19-10 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in attempts on target. Humboldt generated seven of its 10 shots after halftime.
Alvaro Nieves recorded four saves in goal for the Lumberjacks.
The result moved Humboldt to 2-3-3 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play.
UP NEXT
The Lumberjacks will begin a two-match conference road trip Friday, Sept. 25, when they face Cal State San Bernardino at noon at Premier Field.
