SEASIDE, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball battled through three competitive opening sets, but fell to Cal State Monterey Bay in straight sets Friday evening inside The Kelp Bed. The Otters earned the conference victory by set scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-16.
Humboldt remained within striking distance throughout the opening frame. The Lumberjacks pulled within one point at 20-19 before Monterey Bay responded with five of the final seven points to take the set 25-21.
The Jacks produced their strongest push in the second set. Humboldt held a 21-20 advantage late in the frame and moved back in front 23-22 following an Otter attack error. Monterey Bay answered with three consecutive points, closing the set with a service ace and a kill to escape with a 25-23 victory.
The Otters established an early lead in the third set before Humboldt battled back to pull within two at 17-15. Monterey Bay then closed the match on an 8-1 run to secure the sweep.
Graysen Trupp led the Lumberjacks with 10 kills while committing just two errors on 20 attacks for a .400 hitting percentage. Trupp also recorded a solo block.
Addison Bookstaber finished with five kills, while
Rahni Greene contributed three kills and a match-high four total blocks.
Elizabeth Jade Andrade led Humboldt's back row with 10 digs and added three assists.
Brielle Wilson distributed 11 assists, while
Claire Crawford recorded 10 assists and seven digs.
Kendall Fenstermacher also finished with seven digs.
Humboldt recorded 29 kills, 34 digs and six total blocks. Monterey Bay finished with 39 kills and seven blocks while hitting .162.
The result moved the Lumberjacks to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in CCAA competition.

The Lumberjacks will continue their conference road trip Saturday, Sept. 19, when they face Menlo at 5 p.m. inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion in Atherton.
