ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt freshman Amaya Uvalle has been named the FloCollege/CCAA Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of Sept. 21-27.
Uvalle led the Lumberjacks at Saturday's Mike Johnson Classic at Ash Creek Preserve in Monmouth, Oregon. She completed the women's 6K in a personal-best 21:48.1, placing 25th among scoring runners and 26th overall in a field of 129 competitors.
The Guadalupe, Calif. local finished first among Humboldt's runners and helped the Lumberjacks place ninth in the 13-team field. Uvalle earned 25 points toward Humboldt's team score of 242.
Her performance marked an improvement of more than 57 seconds from her collegiate debut at the Jim Hunt Invitational on Sept. 12. Uvalle won that race in 22:45.3, finishing more than 43 seconds ahead of the runner-up while leading Humboldt to the team championship.
Uvalle has been the first Lumberjack across the finish line in each of the team's first two meets this season. Saturday's race was her first against a large regional field featuring NCAA Division I and Division II programs.
This is Uvalle's first career FloCollege/CCAA Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week award.
The Lumberjacks will return to Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 3, to compete at the Charles Bowles Invitational at McCulloch Stadium.
