Jacks Fall to Jessup in Five-Set Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic Finale

ARCATA, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt women's volleyball took the opening two sets and fought off match point in the fifth, but Jessup completed a comeback to defeat the Lumberjacks 3-2 Saturday afternoon in the finale of the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic inside Lumberjack Arena. The Warriors won by set scores of 19-25, 12-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 16-14.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The opening set was tied at 12-12 before Humboldt took control behind Claire Crawford's serving. The Lumberjacks rattled off seven consecutive points, including an ace from Crawford and three kills from Graysen Trupp, to build a 19-12 advantage. Isabella Hartwig closed the frame with a kill to give Humboldt a 25-19 win.

Humboldt carried that momentum into a dominant second set. The Jacks hit .419 with 15 kills and only two attacking errors, pulling away for a 25-12 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match. Hartwig, Trupp and Avary Spoja combined for 13 kills during the frame.

Jessup responded by taking the third set 25-20 before building a 20-14 advantage in the fourth. Humboldt battled back with six unanswered points to tie the frame at 20-20, but the Warriors recovered and held on for a 25-23 win to force a deciding set.

The Lumberjacks opened the fifth with a 3-0 run and later held a 9-7 advantage. Jessup answered and eventually reached match point at 14-12, but Hartwig delivered a kill before combining with the Humboldt defense on a block to even the score at 14-14. The Warriors claimed the next two points to complete the comeback.

Trupp led Humboldt with 19 kills, two aces, eight digs and two total blocks. Spoja followed with 16 kills while hitting .282 and recording two solo blocks. Hartwig added 14 kills with only two errors, finishing with a team-best .400 hitting percentage alongside seven digs.

Crawford directed the offense with 46 assists and completed a double-double with 10 digs. She also recorded a service ace. Elizabeth Jade "Lizzy" Andrade anchored the back row with a match-high 27 digs and four assists, while Kendall Fenstermacher contributed 22 digs, eight kills and an ace.

Humboldt finished with advantages in kills (62-46), hitting percentage (.212-.133) and digs (98-80). Jessup held a 9-5 edge in total blocks and recorded seven service aces compared to five for the Lumberjacks.

The loss moved Humboldt to 3-3 on the season. The Jacks finished the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic with a 1-2 record after earning a straight-set victory over Dominican on Friday.

UP NEXT

The Lumberjacks will open CCAA play Thursday, Sept. 10, when they host Stanislaus State at 5 p.m. inside Lumberjack Arena.
