ROCKLIN, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer produced 10 second-half shots and cut a two-goal deficit in half, but the Lumberjacks' comeback fell short in a 2-1 loss to Jessup on Saturday morning at Warrior Field.
The two teams remained scoreless for most of the opening half before Jessup broke through in the 42nd minute. Brian Ramirez scored off an assist from Jordee Magana to send the Warriors into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Jessup doubled its lead in the 55th minute when Anthony Gambe found the back of the net, giving the Warriors a 2-0 advantage.
Humboldt responded less than 10 minutes later.
De Jon Watson created the opportunity for
Dominik Chipp, who scored in the 65th minute to pull the Lumberjacks within one. The goal was Chipp's second in as many matches after he recorded the late equalizer in Thursday's 2-2 draw against Northwest Nazarene.
The Lumberjacks continued to apply pressure throughout the second half but could not find the tying goal. Humboldt generated 10 shots after halftime while limiting Jessup to three.
Humboldt controlled the overall shot count with a 14-8 advantage, though Jessup placed four attempts on target compared to three for the Lumberjacks. The Warriors held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Edwin Monterrosa played all 90 minutes in goal for Humboldt and recorded two saves. Jessup goalkeeper Curtis Lynch also finished with two stops.
The result moved Humboldt to 1-2-1 on the season and concluded a four-match season-opening road stretch.

The Lumberjacks will travel to Monmouth, Oregon, to face Western Oregon on Thursday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at WOU Soccer Field.
