Jacks fall to No. 21 Chico State in CCAA opener

CHICO – The Humboldt State volleyball team fell in three sets to No. 21 nationally ranked Chico State, 25-15, 25-23, 25-15, in its California Collegiate Athletic Association season opener, Friday.
 
The Lumberjacks fall 2-6 overall while the Wildcats improve to an 8-4 overall record.
 
“I think tonight's outcome was a respectable result,” said Humboldt State head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra.
 
Chico took advantage of the Jacks' errors for a 9-3 lead in the first set, and kept up its momentum for a 25-15 final.
 
In the second set, HSU battled for a lead early on until the Wildcats eventually broke away with a 13-9 lead. At 24-18, the Jacks had hope of a comeback when Jo Arzadon pounded two kills and the team took advantage of the Wildcats errors, for a 24-22 score. Although a service ace on behalf of the Jacks ended the set with a 25-22 end.
 
In the same manner as the first set, another early lead for the Wildcats ended in favor of Chico with a 25-15 score.
 
“I think we played really well in the second set,” said Woodstra. “We cleaned up
 
“Tonight we tried a different rotation and the change was effective,” said Woodstra. “The first set we needed to work out some kinks, the second set we played well and we just couldn't keep up in the third.”
 
For HSU, Danielle Wells had a team-high .545 hitting percentage with seven kills, as Arzdon lead the team with eight kills and contributed 11 assists. Liz Shannon added 13 assists, while Dani Nelson tallied 10 digs.
 
Gillian Hedorff paced the Wildcats with team-high 13 kills while Erica Brick dished out 37 assists.
 
The Jacks will be looking for its first CCAA win of the season when they travel to Turlock to take on Cal State Stanislaus, Saturday for a 7 p.m. first serve.
