TURLOCK – The Humboldt State volleyball team defeated Cal State Stanislaus in five sets, Saturday, to finish its California Collegiate Athletic Association opening weekend.
The Lumberjacks improved to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in CCAA competition, while the Warriors fell to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in CCAA play.

Danielle Wells' .455 hitting percentage with five kills helped the Jacks take set one, 26-24. Battling for lead throughout the whole set, HSU tied Stanislaus for the final time at 24-24, when attacking errors by the Warriors' Lianne Vicchio ended the set in favor of HSU.
“I think we played two different matches tonight,” said Humboldt State head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra. “The first, second and fifth matches we played smart and efficient.”
Taking advantage of the Warriors errors helped the Jacks take an early 10-6 lead, which they never let up, as they took set two with a 25-17 score.
After leading most of the set, the Warriors claimed set three, after tying the Jacks, 21-21. CSU Stanislaus took advantage of a HSU attacking and service error while Angela Ohland and Jen Gee's kills took the set, 25-23.
After another battle for lead, the Warriors took a 16-14 lead and went from there for a 25-20 final.
“The third and fourth sets we got jumpy and made some errors that were not consistent with how we played our first and second sets,” said Woodstra.
With Jo Arzadon serving, the Lumberjacks went on a six-point run through the fifth set to take a 13-4 lead. With hope of a comeback, the Warriors collected three consecutive points but a service and attack error ended the night in favor of the Lumberjacks, 15-7.
“We got fired up, refocused and aggressive in the fifth set,” said Woodstra. “We blocked and defended well. I believe we played smart tonight.”
On the night,
Mallory Briney registered a double-double with 12 digs and 10 kills, while Arzadon followed with 10 kills and 16 assists.
Lynsey Adams contributed 12 digs, while Wells led with a .250 hitting percentage with nine kills and
Liz Shannon dished out 21 assists.
Humboldt State out blocked Stanislaus 12 to one.
Gee paced the Warriors with 17 kills, as Vicchio added 12. Colleen Sullivan recorded 44 assists.
The Lumberjacks open their CCAA home play next weekend when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills, Friday, and Cal State L.A., Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m.
